Getting ready for fall fishing

We're not quite there yet. The water isn't cooled off enough for the really good fishing. Give it a few days/weeks and Gulf Shores fishing will really start to take off.

Fish staging, getting ready for fall activity

The weather has been teasing us with hints of fall, but it hasn't given us that significant front needed to really trigger the fishing activity in the area.

Don't get me wrong, the 80s sure beat the heck out of the 90s, but the water temperatures haven't cooled enough to send the fish into the early fall fishing mode.

Capt. Earl Cornelius said the fish are staging nicely on the flats south of the Causeway.

Gulf State Park

Gulf State Park consists of 6,150 acres on the Alabama Gulf Coast with 2 miles of sugar white sand beaches. Gulf State Park has modern and primitive camping, cottages, marina, trails and fishing. What more could you ask for? How about tennis, group pavilions, nature programs and picnic areas? It's all there at Gulf State Park.

Gulf State Park is located in the city of Gulf Shores, directly on the Alabama gulf coast. Sugary white sun-kissed beaches, a surging surf, seagulls and seashells await you at Gulf State Park.

Mobile Big Game Fishing Club tournament this weekend

The 40th annual Mobile Big Game Fishing Club Labor Day Tournament gets underway this weekend. This could be the year they give away that million dollar prize for catching an Alabama state record Blue Marlin.

Fishing has been so good this year along the Alabama Gulf Coast, you have to believe it might happen. After all, Alabama's Blue Marlin state record is only a measly 779.3 pounds. That's well below the state records for Blue Marlin among the other Gulf Coast states.

Blue Marlin State Records

  • Florida's is 1,046 pounds
  • Mississippi's is 1,054.6 pounds
  • Louisiana's is 1,018.5 pounds
  • Texas' is 876.5 pounds
  • Alabama's is 779.3 pounds

Registration for the 40th annual Mobile Big Game Fishing Club Labor Day Tournament runs from 5-8 p.m. Friday. The captains meeting starts immediately after registration. Boats may leave after mandatory sign-out by captain or owner.

Alabama Gulf Coast Fishing "Off the Hook"

It's hard to add much to this story in today's Register. If you're into the fishing thing now is the time to head for Gulf Shores and the Alabama Gulf Coast.

Fishing tournaments lately have been turning out the records and the amazing run of great fishing is continuing. How long will it last? It's anyone's guess.

Better not wait.

Offshore fishermen enjoying bluewater bonanza

For many offshore anglers along the Gulf Coast, it just doesn't get much better than it is right now.

Orange Beach Billfish Classic a huge success

Records continue to fall all along the Alabama Gulf Coast as yet another fishing tournament meets with outstanding success. This year's Alabama Deep See Fishing Rodeo saw several records broken.

Anglers in last weekend's Orange Beach Billfish Classic turned in record numbers of huge fish. The great fishing off shore in the Gulf of Mexico continues. Look for even more records to fall in this weekend's Conde Cavalier Mardi Gras Fishing Tournament which will be held on nearby Dauphin Island (across Mobile Bay from Gulf Shores and Fort Morgan) at the Dauphin Island Marina.

Orange Beach Billfish Classic starts today

The Orange Beach Billfish Classic gets started today with final registration and the captains meeting at the Orange Beach Marina.

The captains meeting is set for 5:30pm at Mangos Restaurant. Boats may leave after signing out at the registration table, but may not leave earlier than 9pm, when kits and tournament designator packages will be distributed. Registration forms must be filled out completely before a boat departs the marina.

Fishing begins at 5:30am on Friday morning. All lines must be out of the water at 4pm Saturday unless a fish which has already been reported to a committee boat is still being fought. Boats must pass under Perdido Pass Bridge no later than 8pm Saturday.
