Alabama Gulf Coast Fishing "Off the Hook"

It's hard to add much to this story in today's Register. If you're into the fishing thing now is the time to head for Gulf Shores and the Alabama Gulf Coast.

Fishing tournaments lately have been turning out the records and the amazing run of great fishing is continuing. How long will it last? It's anyone's guess.

Better not wait.

Offshore fishermen enjoying bluewater bonanza

For many offshore anglers along the Gulf Coast, it just doesn't get much better than it is right now.

Brian Bennett at J&M Tackle described it as so good it's "off the hook."

At last weekend's Orange Beach Billfish Classic, there were 54 billfish caught and released. The Caribe released a couple of blue marlin, a white marlin and a swordfish on 30-pound tackle. The boat went out again Tuesday and released another blue.

There are loads of white marlin in the northern Gulf of Mexico, especially around the Elbow, Nipple and Dumping Grounds.

As for the wahoo and dolphin, Bennett said a grass line or rip is not necessary. Bluewater is the only requirement. And the tuna bite has picked up, especially around the Na-Kika rig, although that rig is a pretty good boat ride of about 112 miles.

The nearshore bite has been decent, as well. Most boats, however, have to run about 40 miles out to get to some red snapper willing to bite.

King mackerel and Spanish mackerel are hanging along the beach from Orange Beach to Dauphin Island, and the rigs about 20 miles out are loaded with kings.
