Ship Island to Reopen to Visitors
Visitors and vacationers to Gulfport, will soon get one of their most popular attractions back. Ship Island is a barrier island just off the Mississippi Gulf Coast. On April 14th, Ship Island is scheduled to reopen to access by tourists.
According to the National Park Service, Ship Island won't be back to its former glory by the time it reopens in mid-April; but plans are underway to restore the island's facilities.
Watching the Birds at the Beach
The Great Backyard Bird Count wrapped up this weekend across the US. Gulf Coast birders reported their sightings from nearly every community along the Gulf of Mexico. Alabama reported nearly 113,000 bird sightings of 160 separate species of birds. Mississippi reported nearly 80,500 bird sightings of 121 separate birds species. Florida made the top 10 list of states reporting with just over 270,000 bird sightings of a whopping 248 separate species.
