Condos allowed in mouse habitat

Beach Club West and Gulf Highlands projects to move ahead in habitat protected by for Alabama Beach Mouse

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service has announced it will allow developers to begin work on two separate projects in the Gulf Shores area. The agreement will permit developers of the Beach Club West and Gulf Highlands projects to begin work in areas designated as critical habitat for the Alabama Beach Mouse. The permits will allow developers to add over1,000 condo units, parking decks, commercial retail and office space, beach houses, swimming pools and tennis courts.

The two developments receiving permits are the Beach Club West and Gulf Highlands.

The Beach Club West development will consist of two 20-story towers featuring 473 units, 13 single-family homes, resort amenities and a commercial building.

The Gulf Highlands condo project will consist of four 20-story towers with 120 condos apiece and a fifth but shorter tower with 72 units.

The permits issued by the Fish & Wildlife Service allow the developers to develop approximately 41 acres without legal liability for unintentionally "taking" or harming the endangered mouse or its dune habitat. Seperate conservation agreements will also require the developers to preserve about 97 acres of beach mouse habitat.
