Gulf Shores July 4th celebration details

The City of Gulf Shores will celebrate the Fourth of July with a display of fireworks, beginning at 9 tonight. Thundering blossoms, crackling chrysanthemums, and twinkling stars full of gold and glitter are a few of the specialty shell fireworks that will be included in the show.

Sunny 105.7 radio will play music to coincide with the show. In the case of delay or cancellation, Sunny 105.7 will broadcast that information immediately.

The fireworks may be seen from any Gulf Shores-area beach. The display will be launched from a barge in the Gulf of Mexico, south of the point where Gulf Shores Parkway (Alabama 59) meets the Gulf. Authorized fireworks watercraft will be located on site at approximately 3 p.m. As a safety measure, no boats or personal watercraft will be permitted in the surrounding area.

Mobile Symphony Orchestra preps for Independence Day symphony at The Wharf

The Mobile Symphony Orchestra prepares for their 2006 Independence Day symphony, a pops concert at The Wharf.

More accustomed to the 2000 seat Saenger Theatre, or to the Mobile Civic Center, the orchestra is looking forward to playing before an audience expected to be fully five times larger.

If all goes according to plan they hope to make this the first in an annual series of Fourth of July celebrations.

Orange Beach Overture

Cue the fireworks.

On Tuesday the bus and caravans from Mobile and Pensacola will hit the road for Orange Beach, where the Mobile Symphony Orchestra will perform an Independence Day pops concert in The Wharf's spanking-new amphitheater.

2006 Alabama Coastal Birdfest scheduled

Like the migrating birds themselves the Alabama Coastal BirdFest will return this year. Last year's event was questionable due to the weather conditions along the Gulf Coast, but it went on as planned and to great success.

This year's event is sure to be as successful as last year's, and hopefully both weather and birds will cooperate to the fullest.

Dates set for Alabama Coastal BirdFest

FAIRHOPE (AP) — The Alabama Coastal BirdFest, set for Oct. 19-22, includes some new activities in the Mobile Bay area.

The third annual BirdFest includes nearly 20 tours to prime birding spots on the 240-mile long coastal birding trail.

"This year we're adding a brand new trip and repeating some old favorites," said John Borom, president of Mobile Bay Audubon Society, which helps sponsor the event.

Borom said three new tours to Dauphin Island have been added, including a Mobile Bay excursion on the Dauphin Island Sea Lab research vessel, the A.E. Verrill, a 65-foot ocean-going craft. Advance registration is required for the tours and evening events.

Parrot Heads' "Stars Fell On Alabama" event in Gulf Shores raises money for charity

Parrot Heads help charity

Members of the Towns Around Biloxi Parrot Head Club, working with Parrot Heads from clubs in Alabama, helped raise more than $14,000 for charity in March.

In April a solo fundraising Poker Run event raised an additional $875 for the South Mississippi Division of the Alzheimer's Foundation of the South.

Two checks from these fundraisers were presented recently by David Barnes, club president, to Rosemary Hudgins, executive director of the South Mississippi Division of the Alzheimer's Foundation of the South.

The first event, "Stars Fell On Alabama," was held March 9-12 at the Island House Hotel and Live Bait in Orange Beach, Ala., and LuLu's Homeport Marina in Gulf Shores, Ala. This annual weekend event, in its seventh year, featured a silent auction, raffles and sponsorships recognized through an event T-shirt. It drew Parrot Heads from all over the country and benefited not only the Alzheimer's Foundation of the South, South Mississippi Chapter, but also the Salvation Army in Mobile and Baldwin counties of Alabama; the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo in Gulf Shores, and the Family Sunshine Center in Montgomery.
