Kayaking photo-journalist Rob Nykvist had a busy weekend. Rob toured the Mobile River on Saturday and Dauphin Island on Sunday. Rob visited Sand Island by kayak, where he did a little birding. This Brown Pelican, and other shots at Rob's site clearly show that if you want to get close to Dauphin Island's birds you have an advantage in a kayak.

Brown Pelicans are among my favorite birds to watch. I've been known to sit on the beach for hours watching them skim the waves with such amazing ease. I've found it's about the best way to end a great day at the beach.
