The State of Alabama has used funds from a federal grant in addition to its own to purchase over 2200 acres of additional lands from the Coastal Land Trust and from the Weeks Bay Foundation in the Mobile-Tensaw Delta. The Mobile-Tensaw delta is an area rich in the kind of natural beauties typically associated with the deep south. The delta is a region of rivers, marshes and bayous; a rich habitat for wildlife and a popular locale for birders and nature lovers.

Alabama buys 2,217 acres in Mobile-Tensaw Delta
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The state government has acquired 2,217 more acres of wetlands in the Mobile-Tensaw Delta that will be used for conservation, recreation and nature study.
The delta, a region of rivers, bayous, marshes and forests in Mobile and Baldwin counties, is an area rich in natural beauty and wildlife that the state must work to preserve, Gov. Bob Riley said in a statement Monday.
The state already owns more than 100,000 acres in the delta.
A $1 million federal grant allowed the state to purchase 1,533 acres from the Coastal Land Trust. The state used a $1.2 million federal grant to purchase 452 acres from the Weeks Bay Foundation and $615,000 from the state's Forever Wild land preservation program to buy another 232 acres from the Weeks Bay Foundation.
