Construction should begin by midsummer on Tanners Way, a 40-unit condominium complex on West 36th Avenue in Gulf Shores, according to Hugh Headrick of REMAX of Orange Beach, whose sales team is marketing the units. The 1,100-square-foot, two-bedroom units are priced at $176,000 and the 1,750-square-foot, three-bedroom units go up to $275,000, he said. The developers are Joe Garris Sr. and Phillip Martin, and the contractor is Duke Construction. There will be five buildings, and condo sales will go to straight to hard contract.
Parrot Heads help charity
Members of the Towns Around Biloxi Parrot Head Club, working with Parrot Heads from clubs in Alabama, helped raise more than $14,000 for charity in March.
In April a solo fundraising Poker Run event raised an additional $875 for the South Mississippi Division of the Alzheimer's Foundation of the South.
Two checks from these fundraisers were presented recently by David Barnes, club president, to Rosemary Hudgins, executive director of the South Mississippi Division of the Alzheimer's Foundation of the South.
The first event, "Stars Fell On Alabama," was held March 9-12 at the Island House Hotel and Live Bait in Orange Beach, Ala., and LuLu's Homeport Marina in Gulf Shores, Ala. This annual weekend event, in its seventh year, featured a silent auction, raffles and sponsorships recognized through an event T-shirt. It drew Parrot Heads from all over the country and benefited not only the Alzheimer's Foundation of the South, South Mississippi Chapter, but also the Salvation Army in Mobile and Baldwin counties of Alabama; the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo in Gulf Shores, and the Family Sunshine Center in Montgomery. Baas earns spot in U.S. Senior Open
John Baas, a teaching pro at Craft Farms Resort in Gulf Shores, fired a 69 at Arrowhead Country Club in Montgomery on Monday, then won a sudden-death playoff to qualify for the U.S. Senior Open July 6-9 at Prairie Dunes in Hutchinson, Kan.
Baas defeated Frank Johnson of Prattville in the playoff to claim the only berth from a field of 37 players at the Montgomery sectional qualifier.
Baas and Johnson matched pars on the first three holes of the playoff before Baas clinched his first spot in a USGA event with a short birdie putt on the fourth playoff hole.
This is very good news for vacationing families to the beaches of Gulf Shores. Officials in Gulf Shores have taken the responsible, safety minded step of adopting the Five Flag surf condition warning system which is becoming a standard along the Gulf Coast.
Five-flag warning system adopted
GULF SHORES -- Stepping in line with neighboring Orange Beach and Florida Panhandle locales, the City Council voted Monday night to adopt a beach warning system that uses five flags to signal surf conditions.
The five-flag system will replace Gulf Shores' current single red flag method at all 10 of the city's public beaches as soon as the city obtains the necessary equipment, which should be within 30 days, Mayor G.W. "Billy" Duke III said.
When the change occurs, beachgoers will be able to gauge the risk of swimming in the Gulf of Mexico at beaches along Baldwin County and the Panhandle knowing that the same warning system is in use in all areas.
