The Escambia County Commission voted recently to approve measures clearing the way for new development in a 240-acre area on Perdido Key.
The area in question is extremely attractive and thus very valuable, but it also is a key habitat for the Perdido Key beach mouse which uses the tract of land as a corridor between the Perdido Key State Recreation area and the Gulf Islands National Seashore preserve.
The new measures will set aside money for conservation and protection of this endangered species of mouse. Escambia county will get $201-per-year per-unit on all new buildings. The county will also collect a one-time $100,000 per acre assessment on all new development projects.
