Dauphin Island continues to make progress in the recovery process. The following information will serve as a status report on various projects throughout our island community. The Dauphin Island Times has published an article detailing the extent of recovery progress on Dauphin Island.
Dauphin Island vacationers are filling vacation rentals to capacity these days. A recent check on the island showed that while lodging availability on Dauphin Island was more limited this year, there are properties available for rent.
The island, of course, is as beautiful as ever.
Here is a synopsis of the Dauphin Island Town Crier Special Edition
Berm/Beach Stabilization Funded by FEMA, the project will extend from near the public fishing pier to the West End of Bienville Boulevard, at a cost of approximately $4 million.
Roads The Town Council is preparing to repair all damaged roads on the West End North of Bienville Blvd. and on the East End. Work to begin within 60-90 days. Plans underway for permanent repairs on West End roads South of Bienville Blvd.
Utilities The Dauphin Island Water & Sewer Authority and the Alabama Power Company continue to make good progress on the West End of Dauphin Island.
Canals West End canals on the north side which were filled in by storm surge are not eligible for FEMA assistance. The town is applying for assistance from the Alabama State Conservation Department.
Planning Process Through the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs, Dauphin Island is eligible for Federal Funding to create a more disaster resistant community and reduce recovery time following future events. A thorough Strategic Plan will be completed by spring 2006.
The Town of Dauphin Island also plans to revise Dauphin Island's Comprehensive Plan over the next 12-18 months.
